It’s the last week of school and we’re gearing up for the summer holidays together as a family of five.
I’m excited about our get away – mostly because we’ll be adventuring and exploring somewhere new and breaking up our usual home routine.
In the weeks leading up to our getaway I’ve been preparing so that I don’t have to be chained to technology whilst I’m away (I plan to switch off for most of it!)
Preparing for the break has been a great opportunity to assess what’s working and what’s not — both in my life and business in general.
The thing is we can get stuck in a rut sometimes, taking the same actions because it’s what we’ve always done….
But without checking in see if it makes sense and is moving us closer to our goal what’s the point of taking action in the first place?
Which leads me onto this week’s blog post (and video) where I talk about the 2 critical step to take before taking action on your life and career goals.
Whilst imperfect action is definitely a good way to go and beats perfectionism every time….there are 2 things to look at and check in with if you’re actions aren’t actually getting you the results that you want.
And I can think of no better time than the summer holidays to stop and reflect on your life and career….
Not in a place where you can watch the video? Read on for the transcript:
Sometimes the strategies that we take aren’t the most important piece of achieving our goals and our desires.
The strategy piece comes on the outer sphere.
The most piece to getting the results you want is actually going inwards, two steps deeper.
What do I mean by that?
You’ve got to look at what you’re putting out there in the world.
What is the interpretation that you are projecting?
I know this sounds a bit esoteric but bear with me .
Let’s say for example that you’re working in a corporate job and things aren’t going very well and you want to make a change.
You’re thinking of perhaps starting a business or starting at another company.
You’re going to see how it goes and see what sticks.
So let’s say that you are doing everything.
You’re researching how to start a business, you’re looking at other industries you could move into, your re-working your CV.
i.e. you’re doing a lot of strategy which are seemingly helping you get the clarity you need and working you towards your career goals.
BUT things aren’t happening. You feel more stuck.
With more information you feel more overwhelmed. And it’s pushing you further behind.
The reason why you might not be getting further ahead towards your career goals is that you might have a stories and projections about what would happen if you were clear and then had to pursue a certain path.
Your reptilian brain, which likes to keep you safe, might be kicking in…
This is a big one for women who want to start a business (The common thought is: what if I quit my job and then I fail and have to come crawling back. That’s going to be so embarrassing. I can’t do that. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself).
The stories and these interpretations and beliefs that are subconsciously running the show are actually what’s holding you back from moving you forward.
So you’ve got to be able to step back and assess by asking this question:
What are these beliefs that are holding me back?
Why am I sabotaging myself?
I admit I do this in my own business which is why I have colleagues, masterminds and coaches to help me through my blind spots.
How you can do that by yourself (which is something I’ve started to cultivate since having my third child) is to take it a step back further….
By getting into a beautiful state.
Which is something Tony Robbins takes (one of my mentors)….
What do I mean by having a beautiful state?
Being in an emotional state that allows you to make smart decisions.
I love this quote by Albert Einstein:
“No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.”
It’s so true.
When you’re angry and stressed out…maybe you’re thinking “I’m trying all these strategies and I still don’t know if I want to start a business, I don’t know if I want to switch industries, nothing is working.”
If you’re in an angry state, how can you make smart decisions?
How can you be in the right frame of mind to look at the possibilities?
There are always creative possibilities in front of us if we drop back into a more positive and empowering state.
Which is why mindfulness is important, meditation is important, gratitude is important.
Any way that works for you to drop back, get your energy back to yourself and be able to make smart decisions and interpret smart decisions and implement smart strategies to get you there.
So your homework this week is to start looking at what is working, and what’s not.
Shedding a light on what’s not working and unpeeling the limiting beliefs that are holding you back will help you make a conscious shift.
You can then say “Do I choose to believe that?”
It’s always about asking a better question.
In the case of a women who’s unhappy in her job and wants to start her own business but is scared of having to crawl back to her old corporate job…
Rather than “what am I going to do if I fail? How embarrassing is that going to be?”
You can instead ask “What can I do to set myself up for success here? What do I need to know in order to know whether this is the right move for me?”
Can you see how it’s a much more empowering conversation and much more creative in terms of possibility?
That’s your homework for this week.

Have a beautiful week!
