I pushed my headphones deeper into my ears to hear her…
“I got the job” she said quietly.
I answered “That’s great! Congratulations!”
The line goes eerily quiet.
“I’m so confused Shiv. I got what I wanted but it just doesn’t feel right. I feel sad instead of excited.”
Conversations like this were normal when I first started my coaching business.
Women came to me wanting to land that dream job or get onto the next rung of the career ladder…
Sensible goals that made seemed logical and the “right next step.”
And yet when these women achieved their goals, many of them would end up feeling flat, disconnected and daunted at the prospect rather than excited….
The body ALWAYS knows the truth of something and your intuition is always signally you back to what’s right for you (whether you give yourself the time, space or energy to connect to it or not).
The truth is: it’s one thing to set a sensible goal that makes sense and go after it, it’s quite another to tune into the goals that really matter to you and be open to the best outcome possible.
It can be hard to know what path to choose, sometimes.
It can feel like you have to make the “right” decision.
Which is typically the most logical, practical and sensible.
Now I’m not bagging on being practical – it’s important. It really is. But when we dishonour ourselves in the decision-making process, it can lead you down a way funkier path than is necessary and life can intervene in the way of more drastic wake-up calls to listen to yourself again.
Deep down the underlying fear is that if we get our decisions wrong that we’ve made a mistake.
What I’ve come to realise is that the best thing we can do is make our best-educated guesses at the moment and life flows forward from that moment.
No matter which way we go, there are lessons to be learned on this journey called life.
Transition points in life are the BEST natural opportunities to dive deeper into the question of: Why am I here? What am I here to do?
Transition points can look like:
- What subjects to study at school (pre-university/college)
- What major to pick at university/college
- What industry to go into after graduating
- What to do next in your career
- Becoming a mother
- Starting a business
- Burn out or illness

So today I want to share my personal philosophy and conclusions around what your purpose is so that you can rest into the guidance that is always with you.
Your intuition, higher self, god, whatever you choose to call it.
I believe that your body holds the wisdom to your path, purpose and next steps.
My goals it to share a framework for uncovering what your path is going to look like so that you can rest into the safety and knowing that you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.
I’ve been diving into the question of “why am I here?” since I was a little girl.
And I’ve come up with my own personal philosophy based on my own journey as well as working with my clients to uncover their own purpose and path.
The 2 key components to your purpose are:
1. Your Life Purpose
2. Your Soul Purpose
Let’s take each one in turn.
1. Your Life Purpose
Your life purpose is what you’re here to do with your life….and I believe applies to us all….I’ll get to your unique purpose when we get to your soul purpose.
Going back to your life purpose, I believe we all have two aspects of our life purpose.
a. To enjoy being in a human body
This is all about the pleasure and delight of being on the planet and being alive. It’s about enjoying the simple pleasures in life: chocolate, clean fresh sheets, tickling your baby’s toes, sex with your partner…(fill in the blank with whatever you love).
It’s the physical element of having a human body and having reverence for the gift of life.
This is a very simple fact that is easy to forget!
b. To heal our shadow side and learn, grow and evolve.
This is on the other end of the spectrum that brings up our pain and darker sides. I believe we are here to look at the parts of ourselves that are uncomfortable, that need healing and desire liberation so that we can learn to grow and evolve.
Life presents opportunities that allow doing both A and B. More often than not we can get stuck in B — focusing on what’s wrong with us, what needs fixing, what needs healing, what’s “broken” and society our culture has a big part to play in helping us transcend the limiting beliefs that we have about who we are.
Life also isn’t always fair…..we live in a world of privilege and disadvantage. Opportunity and limitation. Support and isolation.
With this in mind, I believe it’s important to take stock and be grateful for where we are, our privilege, the head start we may (or may not) have in our lives… and to remember to be kind and compassionate to not just ourselves on this life journey but to others too. And remember that we’re here to lift EACH OTHER up.
2. Your Soul Purpose
This is unique to you. These are the gifts within you, within your soul that desire to be expressed in this lifetime.
I believe that this is the “being” side of you that you bring with you no matter where you go and who you’re with – without even trying.
Many of the clients that come to me are very focused on their work, career, and businesses.
I believe there is this notion that you will find your purpose when you land that perfect career or start the perfect business. The external piece of purpose.
But what I’ve come to understand is that your soul purpose isn’t about finding the right job or that business — it’s actually way easier than that.
I believe that your soul purpose is to become the person that your soul intended when you came here.
BEFORE you learned that you had to be a certain way to be successful.
BEFORE you learned that you had to work a certain way to be successful.
BEFORE you learned to focus on all your weaknesses and shortcomings.
BEFORE you believed that who you are isn’t enough.
I believe that each of us has unique facets to our soul that we are here to share and express.
It’s not so much about what you do. It’s how you “be”.
The human being side of you.
Your soul purpose is to express your soul gifts — whether that be in your leadership, womanhood, motherhood and relationships. All of it.
Part of the work that I do is with the Akashic Records where we go in and look at what your soul gifts are. It always fascinates me all the different permutations of soul gifts that make up a person.
When you can rest heavy in the knowledge that you have unique soul gifts to share – it allows you to let it be easy.
It’s not about the external choices you make about your path and plan (i.e. the perfect career or business) — it’s about the “being” side of you.
Becoming the person you came here to be.
Stepping into your soul purpose is about owning that part of you with full conviction that who you are is enough and that you have something of value to add to the world.
It’s about owning that you are worthy of being here because you are YOU. Regardless of your credentials, accomplishments and what you’ve been recognised for. Stripping all that away and coming back to you.
So when you’re unlocking your soul purpose it’s not about the external, it’s about…
…..letting more of the real you to shine through.
…..playing with those gifts.
…..trusting your intuition as to what feels right to externally pursue in the world because that feels in alignment with yourself
It’s a very different way of operating in the world.
On the outside, it looks the same, but internally it’s such a shift.
What I want you to take away from today’s blog post:
When you can own:
- what’s important to you
- what you want to express
- what you want to contribute
Then you’ll know what vehicle externally to pursue in the world and what decisions to make in your work, life, health and relationships.
This is the work:
Becoming who you are, tapping into your gifts, building your conviction and courage to be that and devoting to that part of you who is here to live their life and soul purpose.
This is the work that I’m so passionate about and invite you to step into today.
