When I was working in my job and desperate to do something else, I scoured the internet for different personality tests that would help me understand what kind of job I was best suited for.
Secretly I was hoping to find a test that would tell me what made me unique, and then tell me the jobs and industries I should be looking into.
I was looking for a magic pill.
A one-stop shop.
I even worked with a life and career coach who did some special (ahem more expensive) personality tests that ultimately spat out a ‘personalized’ report with 7 pages of potential career options, from being a librarian to an accountant…
Um, not very helpful – and even more confusing!
Even this fancy personality report didn’t get me any closer to figuring out what I wanted to do next with my life.
Whilst I don’t think a personality test is going give you a definitive answer on what you should do with your life, I do think it can help to build your awareness around who you are as a person, what makes you tick and get the clues you need to figure out your next steps.
That in and of itself is super valuable.
If you’ve been looking around for different personality tests and thinking about taking them, then here are my top 3 recommendations.
- Career and CEO style quiz
- Myers Briggs
Just a quick note: These are my personal recommendations based on what I’ve personally done and tried (I never recommend things I haven’t done myself). I have crazy smart psychologist friends who really know their stuff in this area, (I’m talking masters and Phd degrees) and they tell me that these tests aren’t 100% conclusive BUT the tests I’m recommending here are free for you to get started with and “good enough” for the purposes of starting to seek answers and getting those all important clues.
Please take the results you get from these tests as information to help you piece together the puzzle of figuring out your career calling or purposeful business, but not the holy grail! You’re smart, unique and complex, and therefore one test isn’t going to solve all your problems for you. BUT, it’s a great place to start!
With that being said, let’s dive in!
1. Career & CEO Style Quiz
This is one that I’ve personally put together to help understand:
- What makes you tick
- What’s important to you
- What qualities you need to have in your career or business to truly feel fulfilled
- Your strengths
- Your potential blind spots
- Your unique leadership/CEO style
- How to align your career style into your path going forward
It’s simple, easy and fun and a great place to start.

2. Myers Briggs
This is a super popular personality test designed to help you understand how you perceive the world and make decisions. It’s based on the work of Carl Jung (a Swiss psychiatrist and psychotherapist).
The test helps you understand your learning style according to:
I found this personality test fun, and enjoyed the validation of where I sat on the scale on each of the above. Plus, lots of people have taken this test, so it’s fun to take notes and compare!
This is a personality tests that discerns between 9 different lenses through which people see the world.
There are nine main types:
You also have a wing which is a mixture of your main or basic types and consists of a blend of the two types that are adjacent on the enneagram itself.
I liked this test because I found it very accurate for me. It’s not very scientific but the description of my results resonated for my personality and how I feel.
These personality tests are designed to help get you started in discovering what makes you unique. Take the ‘results’ with a pinch of salt and utilise what resonates with you (leave out the rest), and know that you’re truly unique and a complex creature with many different moving parts, when it comes to deciphering your career calling or purposeful business.
I hope these tests bring you some self awareness, and would love for you to share the answers you get from the tests!
