Do you ever feel like your mind is swirling with a constant list of to-do’s and ideas for projects that you never seem to quite get around to?
In my exploration of working on what really matters, I’ve come to realise that we have a lot on our plates that just isn’t important.
Stuff we do because we think we “should” do.
Stuff we do because we don’t want to say no to others.
Stuff we do because it’s what we’ve always done.
This week I’m going back to the ABCD formula I spoke about last week so that you can set soul aligned goals that truly matter and add to your life rather than leave you feeling drained.
If you missed last week’s blog make sure you check out the “A” in the formula – the essential first step to goals setting.
Then dive into this week’s content where we explore the “B”.
Are you ready?
Are you having trouble doing a lot of things but not getting the right things done?
If so this week’s blog is for you.
We’re going to continue the conversation on how to set soul aligned goals that truly light you up from the inside out.
So that you can focus on the right things in your life and in your career.
This week we’re going to talk about “B” in the ABCD formula that I began speaking about last week.
Last week I spoke about “A” achievement. What is it that you want to achieve.
If you missed that lesson/blog make sure you click back and complete step A. Trust me you’ll get so much more out of this post if you do!
I’ll be here when you’re done.
You done with A?
If so, let’s move onto step B.
The “B” part of the formula is about exploring the “because” behind your goals.
Put another way, “why is that goal on your goals list?”
So I want you to play with me and fill in this statement….
I want to achieve [X goal you identified in Step A] because [Y reason].
What are those because statements? What is your Y?
Is it because you want to:
- Feel stronger
- Stretch yourself and grow
- Making your parents proud
- Proving something to yourself
- Living out your calling
- Trust your intuition more
Why are your goals important to you?
This is really the missing piece in goal setting.
Too often we set goals that we think we “should” be working on.
- Lose 10 pounds
- Go for that next promotion
- Read 20 books
- Spend more time with aging parents
These goals are great goals.
BUT those goals might not necessarily be the right ones for you.
You gotta be honest with yourself.
You want to set those goals that light you up and are moving you towards your deeper purpose NOT just setting goals that sound right.
I’ll give you an example of this….
I was on a call recently with a client and we’d come up with a list of career options that would align her to her higher path and purpose for herself.
When I went deeper with her diving into the B. The because. The why behind her goals….she realised something important.
She realised that she didn’t want to spend the next 3 months testing out her short-listed bunch of business ideas to see if she could monetise them. That was just busy work.
In her heart of hearts, she wanted to pursue an idea that brought her to tears because she loved it so much but had no clue how she was going to make it work. On paper this idea was the most challenging of the options. The one she hadn’t done before. And yet the “because” behind the goal was the most deep and meaningful to her…..
We saved a lot of time because we weren’t trying to monetise the ideas that didn’t matter to her. Instead, she had one big focus and could go all in, into figuring that out.
She gotto the clarity on what goals to pursue because she took the time to dig deep and ask “why?” and complete that statement….
[X goal] matters to me because [Y reason].
This applies to you and me too.
So how do we get this clarity and level of focus?
Here are four questions you can ask yourself to make sure you’re setting the right goals for 2020.
First bring to mind your goal or goals and run them through these questions:
- What will achieving this goal do for you? Physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually?
- Why is it important?
- When you achieve your goal, how will that it make me feel?
- Who will this goal impact in your life?
When you can ask yourself these questions and make sure that they feel like a whole body HELL-YES then you know that you’re on the right track.
I’ll give you a personal example….
In 2020 I want to launch my new website that’s more aligned to the work I do and what I want to express.
Here are my answers to the 4 questions to make sure I should be investing my time, energy and money on this goal:
Q1: What will achieving this goal do for you? Physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually?
Achieving this goal will allow me to be more proactive in sharing who I am and what I do with the world. I’ll be able to express with more confidence. It’ll help me go after more opportunities and put myself out there in the world. It’ll help me be more organised and support my audience and clients in getting even more tailored resources that can support them in figuring out why they’re here and what they’re here to do.
Physically: I’ll feel secure, like I have a digital home I feel comfortable in and welcoming people into.
Emotionally: I’ll feel content and happy because I will be more visible with my work.
Mentally: I’ll streamline things so processes and workflows are more seamless and efficient. I’ll free up brain space because I don’t have to do so much manual labour and can rely on tech to support me.
Spiritually: I’ll feel more aligned. What I’m expressing outwardly will align more closely to what I’m feeling inwardly. I’ll feel on purpose and congruent which will feel amazing!
Q2: Why is it important?
My old website doesn’t truly reflect who I am and what my offerings are. I deeply desire to create an online home that feels good.
Q3: When you achieve your goal, how will that it make me feel?
Aligned. Strong. Confident. Supported. Connected.
Q4: Who will this goal impact in your life?
This goal will impact me in how I’m showing up. But also my audience and clients because they’ll get a better experience from me. Also I’ll get more time with my kids because I’m automating things and doing less admin on my end.
OK I feel EVEN more jazzed about this new website now.
I can feeeel that this is a soul aligned goal. YEAH!
- What goal(s) are you working on in 2020?
- How do you feel after answering the 4 questions?
- Is the goal aligned or are you going to ditch it and pick something else?
I’d love to hear from you.
Leave a comment and let me know!
In the meantime stay tuned for next week where we’re going to go deeper into the all important steps C and D.
Once you know you’re goal there are still 2 more steps before you can physically go out and achieve it.
So stay tuned and have a great week!
