This is the last week of school for my older 2 kids and I’m starting to feel the year drawing to a close.
How about you? How are you feeling in your part of the world?
Whilst there’s the usual push of things to do before the holiday period, I’ve been thinking a lot about what’s really important and how I can work smarter not harder next year and cultivate more joy along the way….
…On a sentimental note, my eldest is turning 8 in a couple weeks (honestly I can’t believe it!)
We had a party for him last weekend and it really got me thinking that he’s growing up fast and I really want to savour these precious pre-teen years while I can!
Time is precious and I want to make the most of it.
How about you?
Are you feeling like you want to make the most of your time next year?
If you do then let’s do this together.
For the next 4 weeks, I’ll be sharing with you a four step framework for setting and achieving soul aligned goals for the new year and new decade.
I’m talking goals that really matter, get you juiced up and move you towards the things that are really important in life (beyond just the material).
This week I wanted to talk about “A”….The first step of the formula.
Next week I’ll talk about B and keep going (you get the drift).
If you are curious on how you can set goals that really matter and most importantly achieve the right ones that align to your vision of “success”, then this week’s blog is for you.
Short on time? Read on for the transcript.
Let’s dive into the ABCD formula to achieving soul aligned goals.
So where do we begin?
I believe we’ve got to take a leaf out of Stephen Covey’s Book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” and begin with the end in mind.
What is it that you want to achieve?
That’s the “A” in the ABCD formula: ACHIEVE.
It’s really important to start with the end in mind because otherwise, you’re just working hard for the sake of working hard without really questioning what you’re putting all that effort towards.
Step #1: Reflect on what you want to achieve in 2020 without limits or constrictions
Simply put, you can do this by asking the question:
“What do you I want to achieve in 2020?”
You can break this down any which way you like. If you’ve got your ideas down pat or you’re struggling with coming up with some ideas then you can go deeper in step 2.
Step #2: Round out your goals for 2020
When setting goals we can stick to the usual suspects… “eat more veggies, go to the gym more, go to bed at 10pm every night etc.”
Some of these aren’t REALLY goals that align for you and simply “shoulds.” Instead of just writing what you *think* you’re supposed to, I encourage you to look at your goals more holistically across 3 major buckets.
Here are the three buckets that I use when I reflect for myself and when working with my clients one on one.
Experiences: How you interact, view and experience the world on a day-to day basis.
Growth: How you are learning and developing as a person.
Contribution: How you are giving back and sharing your gifts with the world.
Your experiences, growth and contribution show up in 12 different areas of your life within these 3 major buckets.
When I work with my clients I support them to set soul aligned goals that matter to them across the spectrum of:
- Health + Fitness
- Fun + Creativity
- Career & Business
- Money & Finances
Now please know that I’m not saying that you have to have all areas rocking and firing to live a soul aligned life. What I am saying is that when you can set goals that align to the priorities in your life (at your relevant phase) then you can be focusing on the goals that are truly aligned.
Step #3: Consider the 2 sides of your goals
Typically when we set goals we think of all the things we want to do, acquire or achieve.
We set our goals from this space of:
- What do I want to have?
- What do I want to do/achieve?
And whilst getting concrete, specific and taking action is important, that’s just one piece of the pie.
This aspect is really the masculine side “doing” of things.
Note: When I talk about masculine and feminine, I’m NOT talking about male and female. I’m talking about the energy and characteristics of the feminine and masculine, BOTH of which we all embody regardless of our sexual orientation or gender.
So when we’re looking at what we want to achieve, we’ve also got to take into account the feminine “being” side of things.
To set goals from the space of:
- How will it feel to achieve my goals?
- What does success feel like in my body?
- What do I want to experience?
- What desires to be created through me?
Whilst you note down what you want to achieve, I invite you to look over your list and check in with how it feels to you.
Step #4: Take it outside and into your body
Take some time with what you want to achieve.
- Go for a walk.
- Journal with a nice cuppa tea and your favourite pen (if you’re like me you love your stationery and you’ve got your favourite tools).
- Take a bath.
With this fresh orientation, really feel into which goals feel aligned and which don’t.
Then write all your goals down.
Step #5: Check In
Take a look at that list and ask yourself:
“Am I putting this on my list because it’s something I think I SHOULD be doing?” or
“Is this something that really speaks to my heart and makes me come alive?”
We’ve got to check in and make sure our goals feel good/aligned because otherwise we’ll lose the steam to make them happen.
Personally I want to be working on goals that feel good and make me come alive.
That’s not to say that it’s always going to be a fun and beautiful process and that’s OK by me.
The process and steps to achieve my goals will feel scary, challenging and hard but that doesn’t mean it’s not going to be worth it. So connecting to the aliveness is key to stick at it when the going gets tough.
Next week I’ll be walking you through the next step of the formula to truly make sure that you’re setting goals that are aligned but for now, let’s recap the A in the ABCD formula for setting Soul Aligned Goals.
Here are the 5 steps to ACHIEVING….
- Step #1: Reflect on what you want to achieve in 2020 without any limits or constrictions
- Step #2: Round out your goals for 2020
- Step #3: Consider the 2 sides of your goals
- Step #4: Take it outside and into your body
- Step #5: Check In
I’d love to hear from you.
- How is this resonating with you?
- What are you looking to achieve?
I’d love to know what your cooking up for 2020!
P.S. Stay tuned to next week’s tip where I’ll be sharing the B in the ABCD formula for setting Soul Aligned Goals. It’s going to be a goodie!
