I remember working with my coach a couple of years ago to try and figure out what direction to take my business.
Back then I didn’t have an official business to speak of.
I’d worked with clients but I wasn’t charging much. In all honesty – I was an amateur – a dabbler.
My son had just turned 2 and I was still breastfeeding my 3-month old daughter.
Having fun with my littlies in my then tiny (and messy!) home office
In my heart I had a passion for supporting women to figure out their unique zone of genius and build a meaningful career around it BUT I also faced everyday demons where I questioned myself…
“Am I good enough to do this?”
“Who wants MY help?”
“Is this really going to work?”
“Am I nuts trying to launch a business with a toddler and a baby?”
It wasn’t until I worked through these doubts with my coach and sat down with her to look at all of my achievements and accomplishments – that I could see that I had enough “experience” and drive to launch a real business.
So what if I didn’t have a traditional degree in coaching or psychology or have grey hair and decades of experience?
I had something equally important…
- A passion and drive for what I was doing
- A deep understanding of the women I wanted to work with because I had been there and knew her pain(I still get the shivers thinking back to my corporate days)
- I’d done enough training and was enrolled in a year long program to hone my skills even further
Lesson #1: You don’t have to be perfect. You just need “enough” to get started.
Your fears and doubts will always be there so long as you are stretching, growing and challenging yourself a.k.a. LIVING.
As they say: New Level, New Devil.
I write to you today, pregnant with baby number 3.
I’m 20 weeks – officially halfway – and excited beyond belief as it feels like that missing person in our family is finally going to join us in June.
I’ll be honest with you — when that pregnancy test was positive I was at first excited.
Second a little scared…..that old fear of“Can I run a business with such young kids?” came up.
Before I let the fear and drama takeover, I looked at the reality of the situation and realised I’d done OK transitioning from one to two kids.It definitely wasn’t perfect and elegant but I’d handled the uncertainty before (with a lot of support and help). That meant I could roll with the punches again.
Lesson #2: You will always be put into new and challenging situations. Look for the positives and evidence that you can do it instead of letting your fear and doubt stop you.
I share this story with you to let you know that we’re all human. Whatever you’re worried about in your career or business right now…you’re not alone.
We all have fears and doubts.
The most important thing you can do is to decide how you’re going to handle those fears and doubts.
Looking back now I’m so grateful that I’d allowed myself to get support from my coach during that time.
Starting a big venture on your own can be daunting especially when the odds seem stacked against you — whether that be balancing a career and young kids, living with an unsupportive partner, limited time or money.
For me, having support meant that I didn’t slip back into that negative spiral of “I can’t do this.”
My coach helped me focus on “What can I do?”
Which ultimately saved me time, energy and money that would have otherwise been spent focusing on self-doubt rather than positive action.
We’re meant to be supported. We’re not supposed to do things alone.
As the saying goes :: It takes a village ::
Lesson #3: Get support to keep you on track and accountable. It’ll save you time, effort and money down the road.
There’s a stigma in Society where it’s seen as weakness if we can’t do it all on our own.
For the mums out there – there’s a ridiculous expectation that we should be blazing career women rising up the corporate ladder whilst active with the PTA, present for every one of our kids’ sports days, concerts and recitals. Able to make delicious home made organic food and and have a size 6 body and impeccable “effortless cool” style.
I am just typing that!
There’s no way that you can do it all on your own. Nor should you have to.
Lesson #4: Drop the need for effortless success. Achieving big things takes effort.
We believe we shouldn’t “try” to hard to succeed and that if do try hard – that it’s not cool.
Messed up right? Where did that come from?
We believe that:
- if we read a book on careers we should have our career mapped out
- doing a workout means we can “treat” ourselves to a piece of cake or that extra glass of wine
- a single session or pill will fix our anxiety
If you want something bad enough, then you’ve got to do the work and put in the effort. Surround yourself with positive people who support you and your vision and show up and do the work.
Wherever you are on your journey I want you to know that you can do this. You’ve got what it takes. Trust yourself and go for it.
I designed this program to help women step into a career and life that feels successful to them. For most this is about starting freedom-based business around who you really are as a person….for a small group it’s about succeeding in the corporate world on your own terms.
Whatever the outcome – you’ll leave the program knowing what you’re meant to do in your career so that you can finally be on your path to fulfillment, meaning and happiness doing what you love.
