The other day I was talking to a client who I’ll call Mary.
She came to the call totally defeated. Work was sucking her dry. She felt overwhelmed. Frustrated. She just wanted out from her job.
Once we connected to what she DOES want instead of what she DOESN’T want…things started to shift.
When we dug deeper to understand what’s important to her and why it’s important to her…the clouds parted and more clarity came.
We brainstormed potential options for her and we unlocked the winning idea for her to explore…
How did we know she was on the right track?
Her heart and her head were in sync. Working together. Heart first. Head later. It was a beautiful thing.
And it’s possible for you too.
By going deeper.
Want to know how you can start that process for yourself?
Watch this week’s video blog to learn how to know if you’re next career step is on the right track.
Short on time? Read on for the transcript.
Last week, I spoke about how to drop into what you should be doing next in your career by stopping the thinking mind and telling yourself “I don’t know.”
We spoke about dropping into your intuition and dialoguing with your Chief Soul Officer.
So by now you should have got some answers in terms of:
#1: What you want
#2: Why it’s important to you
With those answers in mind, you then want to start to drop into that even more.
“Why is what you want important to you?”
You’ll keep asking “Why why why why.”
This is the time to become that annoying three year old who just ask the question “Why why why?” ALL the time.
So why should you do this?
Because what happens is, we’re so used to going through the motions….
….getting a cup of coffee in the morning, going to work, checking emails, having meetings with bosses meetings, having client meetings etc. etc. etc.
What happens is that we fall into a routine and we don’t realise that we fallen into a groove or a rut.
If I’m honest with most people don’t listen to the real heart of what is that they’re meant to be doing and we lose touch with what’s important to us. It feels foreign and unfamiliar.
So your answer that you got back in last week’s video. You’re going to keep digging why it’s important to you.
So let me give an example.
For me in my own life I know that I want to write a book.
I know that it’s coming yet now is not genuinely not the right time.
I’ve got other things that I want to be working on to get there but I know that I write a book and why.
So what are my why’s with writing my book?
I want to:
- be in that space of creative flow
- experience what it’s like to be in the process of writing a boo
- put all of the concepts and ideas I’ve been learning for so long together in my own way
- better see the links and consolidate the common universal challenges that we all face in pursuing our purpose and I want to share what I see.
Plus I’m not going to lie, I think it’d be pretty freaking cool to have a book on a shelf and I really want to make a contribution. I want to have a voice. I want to have something to add to this conversation of career fulfillment and living out your life’s purpose.
So that’s my why!
When I share my why I actually start to get really excited.
I can feel it in my body.
I don’t know if you can tell …. I smiling. I’m lit up by the idea.
That’s a really really good sign that you’re onto something!
So when you drop into what it is that you want you’re going to see what goes on for you in your body.
This happens with my clients too… I can see their faces change and I can see that sparkle in their eyes. I can see the excitement and feel it.
And THAT’s what you want to tap into.
Once you’ve tapped into that…then what normally happens is the rational mind comes in. I call it the Chief Risk Officer. She can come in and say…
“Who you? You’ve never done that before. What credibility do you have? You don’t have a PhD..etc”
All that negative self-talk starts to come in.
What you do with those voices is you dialogue back and say…
“You’ve got some valid points but you’re not going to stop me. I’m going to start with what I want and reverse engineer my way there.”
But what happens is so often we cut ourselves off at the knees and we don’t even allow ourselves to go after what we want.
For some of you, you won’t even have a reason why, you won’t be able to articulate it with words. You’re just going to know in your body that it’s true for you. Own it.
I’m going to tell you (because so many people around you are going to tell you that you can’t do it) YOU CAN DO IT.
When I say “Do it!” I do not mean quit your job and do it.
I mean start. Start doing what it is that you want to do on the side.
So for me and my example….when it genuinely comes time to write my book (give me 8 months when all 3 kids are in school)…. I would tell myself I’m a writer and I would write every day whether it’s 10 minutes 15 minutes 30 minutes or an hour.
I would just show up and be in that process of “being” from the get go.
So that’s what I invite you to do now.
Go into your why and notice what comes up for you.
Do you feel it in your body?
Can you feel tingles?
What does your personal barometer for “I’m on the right track feel to you?
Start to feel success now and start to embody those feeling in terms of daily actions.
You know…I don’t have to be successful also already to be an author. I can be a writer. I can be that if I chose to claim it today.
So choose yourself and choose your desires.
What you want is perfectly unique to you and you’re 100% allowed to have it and own it.
So let me know in the comments.
What is it that you want and why?
What do you feel in your body when you think about it?
I would love to know.
Wishing you a beautiful week.
P.S. ***Last Call*** I’ll be on the panel of The New Savvy launch on January 25th speaking about how to define your version of success and dialogue with your mind to create habits for success as you envision it…if you’re in Hong Kong I’d love to meet you there.
