Earlier this week I delivered my first webinar training since I went on maternity leave.
On the call we talked about how to go from being Stuck to Successful and realign your career ladder against the right wall in 2017.
It felt AMAZING to be on the phone with you all. I’ve really missed interacting with you and getting my teacher hat on. Hearing your stories, understanding your struggles, listening to your visions of success…you guys completely INSPIRE me and I am so excited to be getting back to business full time.
In fact you guys helped me realign to my own mission and vision and for that I’m so grateful!
During the training I explained a framework that I not only work with my clients on, but also personally use when I’m not sure which way to go in my career. It’s a framework the Japanese actually have a word for:
Ikigai: which means “reason for being”
And that’s what I ultimately want to support you on.
Our careers are a part of who we are. They don’t define us. They don’t make us. They aren’t us.
We spend the majority of our time at work and I believe that it’s important to find a vocation and mission that is in alignment with who we are and allows us to express ourselves and contributes to our “reason for being.”
That’s what I want to explore further with you today.
Perhaps you’ve heard of this concept, perhaps you haven’t.
No matter what please read on because I’ve added another layer which I believe is the missing ingredient to finding your Ikigai and confidently moving forward to pursue it.
Let’s dive in!
There are many paths to success and only you can answer what the right path is for you.
I believe the best way to decide your path is to get clear on your Ikigai. Your “reason for being” The intersection of what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs and what you can get paid for.
When you’re able to tap into your passion, profession, mission and vocation that’s when you’ve got your career sweet spot.

When you can unlock these missing pieces you’re in alignment with your higher, smarter, authentic and wise self. This is the magical place from which you can truly create an incredible life. This is what successful career women have managed to unlock.
Think about those women you admire: Oprah, Sheryl Sandberg, Arianna Huffington…it’s pretty clear that they’ve found the intersection of these 4 areas.
Whilst this makes sense when you look at it from a cerebral level, it’s another thing to actually figure out all the missing pieces you need to know how this translates to YOU and YOUR unique situation.
I’ve another added layer to my framework that I’ve been honing and refining whilst I’ve been on maternity leave and I believe this is the missing key to truly finding your Ikigai and that’s what I call the SMS Formula which stands for:
S: Strategic Action
M: Meaning Maker
Let me explain…
When we think about solving a problem most of us jump into what strategic action we can take.
For example, if you’re not happy in your career you could take strategic action in the form of rewriting your CV, looking for other jobs online, ask for a transfer to name a few examples.
These are tactics that may or may not work for you. And the reason I say that is because it takes exploring things at a deeper level in order to truly understand what the right solution is for you.
How you are interpreting your situation and giving meaning to what you’re experiencing is going to influence what strategic action that you take.
Let’s say you’re not happy in your career and the real reason is because you have a crappy boss.
You can choose to interpret this scenario in a number of ways:
Interpretation #1: You have to leave because you can’t have a successful and happy career with a bad boss.
Interpretation #2: Your boss is a challenge but this is an opportunity to stand up for yourself and set some boundaries.
Interpretation #3: Your bad boss is the sign you need to accept the new job offer that came up.
Can you see how your belief system and the meaning you make of a situation may cause you to take a different course of action?
Without being aware of these beliefs that are running the show you may be taking action that is ultimately setting you up to fail.
But it goes deeper than this…
The meaning we give to a situation depends on our state. Otherwise known as our energy, emotion, vibration, mood or frequency.
If you’re in a positive state you’re likely to be able to interpret things in a more positive way.
Going back to that crappy boss….
If you’re in a positive state then you’re likely to laugh him off and find his behaviour funny, silly or just baffling. You’ll have a completing different interpretation of him and the action you take to manage him.
On the flip side…
If you’re in a negative state then you’re likely to see him as a thorn in your side, the very bane of your existence, or just another thing that isn’t going right in your life. You’ll be miserable, upset and may decide to do whatever it takes to get as far away from him as possible.
It’s important to be aware of these 3 phases because most of us aren’t aware that we’re disempowering ourselves.
Most of us operate from:
Strategic Action —–> Meaning Maker —–> State
We let our actions dictate how we interpret our situations and ultimately how we feel.
When really we should be doing it the other way around:
State —–> Meaning Maker —–> Strategic Action
When we get into a positive frame of mind, we interpret things from a clearer more aligned perspective and take the action that is right for us.
This is how and why I think the law of attraction works.
If you’re in a state or energy that is positive then you’ll call in more of what you do want (i.e. the opportunities, guidance, people, resources etc) because you’re in a more empowered frame of mind. Strategic action is important, yes. But it’s coming from a deeper soul aligned place.
Going back to our Ikigai framework…
I believe the reason so many of us don’t find our Ikigai or career sweet spot is because we haven’t mastered the SMS formula. We don’t work on our state/energy and emotions first and foremost in order to take the right action that are aligned to what’s right for us personally (which is why tactics alone don’t work).
Most of us are so burned out it’s not a good place from which to make any decisions. So I encourage you to take breaks, sabbaticals and look after yourself. Self-care is not selfish it’s smart and imperative to taking the right action that’s truly aligned to what’s right for you.
And so this is my framework incorporating everything I’ve just discussed here in this (rather long) post!
When you’re able to send yourself an SMS and operate from the inside out starting with the right state to discover your Ikigai, that’s when you can take the right strategic action that’s in alignment with your unique career sweet spot.
