When you’re unhappy in your job it can be really hard to see the forest for the trees and make any decisions at all because everything is so overwhelming, daunting and stressful.
I was speaking to a client the other day and we were talking about her exit strategy.
We discussed the anxiety of having that difficult conversation with your boss telling him that you’re quitting.
When I left my last corporate job, I remember being so worked up and nervous about the conversation.
It felt like breaking up with a long-term boyfriend… “It’s me…not you…” and I felt so guilty for letting my boss down.
But as I was talking to my client…I genuinely couldn’t recall the reasons I had given to him and how I had actually explained that I wanted to leave.
When I broke the news, my boss was shocked to say the least. Especially because I hadn’t shared any clues that I was struggling (I had mastered the fake smile pretty well), so I was naturally super anxious about bearing the news…especially when the team had a lot of critical projects going on and I felt like I was letting them down and leaving them in the lurch.
But that’s the thing…when you’re so into a job, career, or situation…you don’t realize that you’ve created a very small microcosm of a world around you. And that life is much bigger and there are way bigger fish to fry.
When I ultimately left I felt so free.
And I felt silly for taking my job and myself so seriously.
I was working in corporate real estate (aka negotiating office leases) – hardly a life saving job.
Why did I work myself up?
The truth is, most of the women I know are contentious, caring, and 100% women of their word — wanting to do right by others…sometimes to the detriment of their own desires and inner wisdom.
When we know a job or a career isn’t working and want to do something else that seems completely unrealistic we can talk ourselves out of making a change at all (even though deep down we know better).
We can tell ourselves….
…. It’s too much to want to go for a job I’d really like
…It’s too big a dream to start my own business
…Who am I to do this?
…I’m not good enough
…I need more experience
The truth of the matter is that you owe it, not only to yourself, but also to others to get out of your own way and go after that big dream of yours.
This week I invite you to get out of your own way and hear me out on the 3 reasons why you need to pay attention and take action on that dream career or business of yours.
So why is it important to go after that big crazy career or business dream even if it seems unrealistic?
No one wins when you’re in a job you don’t love.
You know that because when you show up to your uninspiring job you feel miserable, you resent the job, you hate the work that you’re doing and you start become a little bit bitter and miserable.
I know this because this has happened in my own life and I’ve seen this happen with clients too.
What you can do to get out of the rut is to take back control of your situation and make a decision:
“I’m not going to put up with this. I’m going to make a positive change and do what I can to go after a career or business that truly lights me up.”
If you’re dream or business seems a bit crazy or unreasonable. Maybe you don’t have the skills set or have what it takes to make it happen.
I’m here to tell you that you do.
You owe it to yourself and others to after that big career or business dream of yours.
Here are 3 reasons why.
Reason 1: You bring other people down when you’re miserable
Because you’re not happy you radiate a negative energy and other people feel it.
No one wants to be around someone depressed.
Reason 2:You owe it to yourself to step into your full potential
There is no sense of pride or badge of honour associated with playing small.
We need you in the world. We need you to shine, to use your unique skills set, strengths and to use that beautiful personality of yours to solve a problem and come here to do the work that you were called here to pursue.
There is no one in the world that does what you do the way that you do it.
It’s up to you to figure out how you can make a positive contribution to the world using your natural strengths, talents and experience.
Reason 3:We need more positive role models in the world
I’m a mum and this is really front and center of my mind.
When my children go up, I know that they’re going to look towards role models who are inspiring them. Leaders who are leading in the right way.
“Right” is obviously very subjective. But for me personally, I’m talking about conscientious, heart based, caring women who think about others, the planet, the environment in general.
We need women like this to step into positions of power making positive change and being a role model to future generations and other women around them.
In a nutshell I really want you to:
Get out of your own way. Come out of the shadows. Embrace who you really are.
There really is no one in the world that can do what you do the way that you do it.
So take the time to figure out what that means to you.
We want to see you shine.
We want to see you playing big.
We want to see you making a big impact of yours.
