It was my son’s 2nd birthday yesterday and I’m feeling super reflective and happy…
He’s been such an amazing teacher in all areas of my life.
From learning to surrender, trust, play and be curious to maintaining boundaries….I could go on!
The biggest lesson he’s taught me is to listen to my heart instead of leading with my head.
It’s still a lesson I’m learning and like everything, there are fun days and hard days!
You may be wondering…
Why am I sharing this with you? And what does it have to do with your career?
I believe the gift of listening to your heart can make you a better leader, person, mother, friend, daughter, partner and overall human being.
I think the reason why so many of us can become unhappy and unfulfilled in our life and careers is because we make decisions solely from our minds.
We make decisions based on what makes sense, is sensible and practical. Whilst that’s super important — it’s not everything.
Without paying attention to the intuitive nudges you get, dabbling with wild ideas, taking a holiday for yourself…you can fall into the trap of waking up wondering how life got so monotonous, serious and boring.
Whilst I’m not suggesting you do a pendulum swing and make crazy changes in your life and career (hey your heart may be guiding you to quit your job tomorrow and take a year off)…I am saying that you can play and have fun with where your heart is guiding you.
Curious to know how?
Watch this week’s video to find out.
Short on time? Read on for the transcript.
Do you ever feel like your heart is pulling you in a certain direction in your career?
- Start a Business
- Change Industries
- Start a side project like writing a book
Yet your rational mind holds you back and tells you that it’s not such a good idea?
If so this week’s episode is for you.
This week’s video is coming to you on my youngest son’s 2nd birthday.
I’m feeling a little reflective because it’s almost like I can remember that day like it was yesterday.
In all honesty, the experience of wanting to get pregnant with baby #3 and the whole birthing experience was a process of listening to my heart instead and letting my mind get on board as a secondary driver.
As opposed to letting my mind always lead with logic, plans and strategy.
My son was not part of the original plan. When my husband and I got married we always wanted to have 2 kids.
When we were away on a family holiday in Vietnam I remember being watching my husband playing with my 2 kids in the pool and thinking “somebody is missing.”
I don’t know where that thought or feeling came from.
But it just came to me.
I shared it with my husband and he was like “No! Are you crazy?”
We started discussing the implications:
As we spoke I thought “You’re right, maybe this desire is just a weird hormonal moment I’m having.”
Seeing my hubby with my 2 kids was a heartwarming moment and still gets me every time.
Months later, after not discussing the issue any further, we decided we wanted to have another baby and we were gratefully lucky to fall pregnant.
(Side note: I know many people have challenges with falling pregnant and this is something that I don’t take for granted. I’m very grateful)
During this time of being pregnant with my son, it was a time of my heart speaking to me in weird and wonderful ways.
I can only describe it as a spiritual awakening.
I was drawn to lots of new and wacky modalities. I remember exploring different workshops here in Hong Kong from Reiki to Shamanism to Crystal Healing.
I just went for it and followed my heart without necessarily letting my rational mind get on board and tell me that I was crazy.
And I had fun with it.
I’m going to be sharing more about some of the tools that I’ve learned and how I can support you with your career but that’ll come later.
My point is that your heart is guiding you in a certain direction for a reason. If you feel like you’ve got that voice niggling inside of you, I invite you to give the voice some airtime.
You don’t have to go and quit your job and start that business or change industries right now or even start writing that book right now (that’s what I spoke about last week is now the right time to take action?)
But you can take some baby steps to test out this idea.
You can take time to explore that seed of inspiration and seed of guidance that you’re getting to see where it takes you.
I think that sometimes we can be all or nothing.
We pendulum swing.
This is what I see with the women that I work with.
When I get on the phone and chat with them most of them say, I’ve got this high flying career and I think I might want to go and become a nurse, or work for an NGO, or start a social enterprise.
Whilst these are noble professions, the desire to change can be a real knee-jerk reaction with what’s happening in your life.
I intie to you play, dabble and listen to that voice that’s guiding you in a certain direction.
You don’t have to make a choice right now but you can play and have fun with it.
This is the thing as I look at my son now, who’s 2 years old, and I look at the world through his eyes.
I can see that he’s curious. He’s playing. He’s not judging.
He probably can’t discern between head and heart.
That’s not even a conversation that would make sense even if he could speak to me with his words.
He just is.
He just is himself.
I think that’s what we have to do for ourselves as an adult.
It’s not about becoming something.
It’s actually about unlearning and peeling back the layers and blocks and conditioning and belief systems that we’ve picked up as we’ve got older and come back to who we really are – at a deeper soul level.
It’s about coming back to:
- What it is that we really desire.
- What it is that we really love.
Because when you can tap back into your true nature, that’s where the magic happens.
That’s when you find fulfillment and happiness in a career and a life that really lights you up from the inside out.
It’s not about the material success.
That is important but it’s not everything.
And so, that’s my reflection for you this week….
Come back to that voice that’s guiding you in a certain direction.
Have fun and play with it.
It doesn’t have to be all or nothing.
You don’t have to make a big decision right now.
But allow yourself to be curious and be like my 2-year-old son.
Play. Dabble. Fall over. Stutter with your words. Say the wrong thing.
Have fun with the process.
The truth is you’re going to get there.
No matter what you’re going to make it.
You’re going to make your life work for you.
All of it comes down to mindset, beliefs that you believe.
First and foremost, the first key step is to listen to where your heart is guiding you.
As I said I’ve got some pretty cool new tools that I’ve been working with privately with my clients and I’ll be sharing more details about that in the coming weeks.
But this is the first place to start.
Listen to your heart.
Have fun with where you’re being guided.
My question is to you is: how can you play with what your heart is guiding you?
Do you want to sign up for a workshop, take a class, read a certain book, subscribe to a podcast?
These can be really nice baby steps to start to immerse yourself into a different world.
Let me tell you…when you step into a whole new world your eyes and mind will be blow in a whole new way.
As mine has as I’ve been exploring spirituality, energy and quantum physics.
Let yourself have fun and play.
That’s what makes life really interesting.
Leave a comment for me below:
- Where is your heart guiding you?
- What is the one little baby step that you can take to explore that heart’s desire further?
I’d love to hear from you.
In the meantime have a beautiful week.
