Last week we spoke about the foundation step for figuring out whether you should stay the course in your job or jump off the ledge and start your own business.
In order to make any decision it all begins with ALIGNMENT.
By making choices and decisions that are in alignment with the real you (the one who deep-down knows what feels right or not) youwill find that happiness and sense of purpose that you’re looking for.
It’s hard to quieten down the noise of what’s expected of you, what other may people think of your decision, the fear of failure etc. but I honestly believe that the best path you can take, is one that feels in alignment with what feels right to you.
I truly believe that there is no single right answer to the “perfect” career path.
You are a person with many talents, strengths and gifts and how you chose to share those with the world is up to you.
For some entrepreneurship is a great fit. For others intrapreneurship is even better.
So how do you decide and know what to do?
After practicing getting into alignment with your internal gut feeling this past week, here are 5 steps to help you figure out if you should stick it out in corporate or start your own business.
Step 1: Identify what specifically is NOT working for you in your career.
By getting clear on the root cause of what’s making you unhappy in your job, you can proactively decide on the appropriate action plan to make it right.
Step 2: Understand the biggest source of pain in your career
Now that you’ve identified what’s wrong, go back and highlight the biggest source of pain.
It could be a terrible boss. Working for an unethical company. Doing boring and mundane work.
Let’s hone in on the absolute worst part of your job.
Step 3:What can you do to proactively turn this source of pain into something better in your existing situation?
If you had a terrible boss: Could you:
- Have a frank and open discussion with him/her about how to improve the communication between you
- Request a different manager
- Stand more firm in your boundaries
If you work for an unethical company: Could you:
- Live with yourself if you continued working there
- Start scoping out other jobs
- Step up and make a change in the company to turn it around
If you are doing boring and mundane work: Could you:
- Put your hand up for a more interesting project
- Request a transfer to another department
- Make it more fun by turning your job into a game or taking up a hobby on the side
Feel free to rinse and repeat this step if you have multiple stresses in your job.
Step 4:What would be your ideal career situation?
Take a moment to close your eyes and envision an awesome career. One where you’re on happy and have all your wishes granted.
What would you be doing, who would you be interacting with, where would you be?
Step 5: Identify the gap between your existing career situation and your ideal situation.
- How far off are you really?
- Are there some small tweaks you could make to your existing job to make it better?
- Or is it really time for a change?
I’m a big believer in taking a realistic look at what’s going on your situation rather than simply running away.
For some starting a business is the right solution because it honours some of their most important values e.g. freedom, flexibility, adventure, excitement, unlimited potential.
For others, dreaming of starting a business is a way to avoid facing some of the inevitable challenges a career will throw at us.
Follow the 5 steps above and you’ll be on the right path to making the right decision for you.
I’d love to hear from you. Leave a comment and let me know:
- Are you more excited by entrepreneurship or intrapreneurship?
I read every single response.
