Last week I spoke about how I was searching for an answer on where to go next in my career by taking personality test after personality test.
I was hoping that by taking a test I’d get a clear definitive answer on what to do next and be set on my path, ladder against the right wall, ready for the climb again.
But here’s the thing…
The answers and clues on what you should do next in your career are never outside of you, they’re inside of you.
The number one secret to career clarity is to allow yourself to trust your own internal guidance on where to go next.
At the heart of it, you know what it is that you should do next. If you stopped to ask yourself some serious questions, you’d get your answers.
When was the last time you stopped to ask yourself:
- What is my next move in my career?
- Who or what can help me figure this out?
- Give me a sign on whether X opportunity is really something I should pursue?
By asking a better question, you’ll get a better answer.
But here’s the thing. I believe that you’re not getting career clarity because you’re either:
- Not listening
- Judging the answers you’re getting or
- Stuck in analysis paralysis and losing steam
What do I mean?
Let me break it down…
You’re not listening.
I believe that we have an inner mentor or Chief Soul Officer (CSO) guiding us towards fulfilling our purpose and life’s work. The thing is, we don’t give ourselves enough breathing space, or time in our busy days, to really tune in and listen to what it’s telling us.
We get addicted to the chronic pattern of being busy and on the go all the time.
If you don’t listen, your body will do things that will force you to stop and slow down so that you do.
Perhaps you’ll get injured, fall sick for longer than usual, not bounce back from a virus as quickly. These seeming annoyances are your CSO’s way of forcing you to stop, rest and listen. Take heed before you have a breakdown or serious illness. Prevention is always better than pain and recovery.
Solution: Take time out, even 5 minutes a day to reconnect with yourself. Breathe. Listen. Tune In. Ask smart questions that you want answers to like “what should I do next” “what’s the best way for me to figure out my career calling?” and start listening to what answers you get.
No you’re not crazy. You’re working with inner wisdom.
You’ll then be able to take back control and seek out the right resources and action steps to move you closer to your goals. If you need some help tuning in, then check out my article on how to access your Chief Soul Officer (aka CSO) and download your free CSO activation audio.
You’re judging the answers that you get.
You’re a practical woman – I get it.
If your CSO is telling you to quit your job, you’re going to think, “that’s nuts”, and forget about it!
But here’s the thing….your CSO knows what’s best for you. So maybe the answer is to quit your job…eventually but not right now.
Rather than discount or shove the answers you get to one side, allow yourself to follow that thought process. Ask for clues, and ask better questions on how that would unfold. Just ‘go there’, and have fun with the process! You don’t have to commit to anything, so stop putting up a roadblock to exploring what “could” be. You may surprise yourself and see that it’s quite doable.
Solution: Allow yourself to explore the crazy answers that you get. You don’t necessarily have to take action on them, but allow yourself to play it through.
You’re stuck in analysis paralysis.
You want to have the path laid out. To be certain and sure of the outcome if you make a choice to pursue a certain path.
I get it – it’s risky to just throw caution to the wind and give up everything that you’ve worked so hard for.
But here’s the thing, in life there are no guarantees. The best thing you can do is to test and refine quickly and course correct as you go.
This is what I teach in my Brilliant You Inc program which helps you discern between all the different ideas you have, and pick the best path to pursue (after having done some deeper foundational work to explore yourself and your ideas further).
If that sounds appealing to you then you can check out the program HERE.
Solution: Reframe your mindset! Instead of having to make big leaps, commitments and changes, what are the small actions you can take to test, and move forward with, the guidance your CSO?
Baby steps. Breathe.
This can seem a little scary and ‘woo-woo’ to some of you. Especially the more grounded, rational and strategic types. I hear you.
But let me tell you, there’s a difference between working from your own internal guidance first and then seeking out the right resources, tools and information on how to take action vs. relying 100% on a personality test or guru to tell you what you should be doing.
You’ve got to take your power back. You know more than you think!
If you need support in this area then I invite you to check out my Brilliant You Inc. home study program.
I designed the program to give you enough structure to explore why you’re here (and what work you’re meant to contribute to the world), but enough freedom and scope to get your answers, and a framework to work with these answers and actually go ahead and take action so that you can move into your career calling or purposeful business simply by embracing who you are.
If this appeals then you can read more about the program HERE.
In the meantime, I’d love to hear from you:
