Did you have a good Christmas?
I hope you had a great time with your loved ones and that Santa was good to you this year 🙂
We’re still in celebration mode, with family in town and pending celebrations for my son’s birthday in a few days.
This time 7 years ago, I was in the hospital anticipating the arrival of our first born. I hadn’t figured out what I was doing with my career and thought my dream of starting a skincare business was still going to happen.
Given the uncertainty around becoming a first-time mum, I was hesitant to set any goals because I wasn’t sure how I was going to make them happen.
So I decided to make life easier for myself and try something different instead….
Something easier, simpler and quicker.
Rather than making a big list of goals and resolutions, I decided to try a guiding word (aka. intention) instead.
But here’s the backstory.
Going back to 2011…
I wasn’t sure what my life was going to look like as a mother but I knew that I wanted to be growing and evolving…without knowing the specifics of what that looked like exactly.
And so I played with the idea of simply having a guiding word to support me in my decisions and path.
The concept of setting a guiding word may or may not be new to you.
Even if you’ve heard of this concept before please stick around to learn why this is such an effective tool for staying on track to your real soul goals that matter.
With traditional goal setting, we are encouraged to get specific about what we want to achieve with a deadline attached.
Whilst that is great for making sure we hit certain milestones of a project, if we’re working on the wrong projects, then surely that’s just a waste of time?
The beauty of having a guiding word or intention is that it guides to decide which projects and goals you want to go for in the first place.
Let me give you an example….
When I gave birth to my 3rd child I was totally unsure of what my life and business was going to be life.
Unsure, excited, a little daunted and overwhelmed…
I decide that my guiding word for the year was “surrender.”
I had ideas on how and what I wanted to achieve in my business whilst being pregnant and raising my family but in all honesty I had no idea how things were going to be.
The only way to get through the year was if I surrendered.
When things weren’t going my way throughout the year, I remembered my intention and chose to breathe and surrender in that moment.
Surrender meant taking a nap when I felt really tired.
Surrender meant taking a meditation break to get the clarity I needed.
Surrender meant going for a walk to clear my head.
Surrender meant sleeping on things.
Surrender meant committing to a spiritual/mindfulness practice that allowed me to tune into my own intuition and higher guidance.
When I wasn’t sure which way to turn in 2016, I kept coming back to my guiding word.
In 2018, my guiding word was completely different…
The past 7 years have been a period of massive personal growth for me.
I’ve studied numerous courses, practiced my craft, honed in on how I can help a corporate woman figure out who she is and the work she’s here to do….and gone on my own journey into all things spiritual.
In 2018, I decided that I wanted to truly “embody” this knowledge and really own it.
To go beyond theory and protocol and simply “be” in the experience of showing up as all of me in all areas of my life.
And so my word this year was: EMBODIMENT.
I completed a Feminine Embodiment Coaching Program this year too which really supported me in this intention. ***Spoiler alert: watch this space in 2019 for more juicy ways I can support you with this phenomenal modality!***
At this point, I’m not sure what my word is for 2019 but I’m going to do this week’s exercise right along with you so that we can start the year fresh together.
Sound like a plan? I’ll share with you all my word when we’re back in the new year.
Here are 3 steps to figuring out your guiding word for 2019.
Step 1: Ask what is most important to you this year?
Step 2: Get clear on how you want to feel everyday?
Step 3: Brainstorm a list of words
Step 1: Ask what is most important to you this year?
Take a look at your life as a whole and quickly review the various areas. Health, relationships, money, career, adventure, spirituality…however you categorise your life.
Think through these areas and get clear on what single area of your life will have the biggest impact to you in your life?
Is it to:
….eat healthily and get fit so that you have the energy to do all the things you love?
….take the time to find a relationship?
….step up in your career?
Get clear on which area of life you are focusing on and then move onto step 2. If you need help on this, make sure you check out last week’s blog post on the only 3 areas you need to know about to reset your life and career quickly.
Step 2: Get clear on how you want to feel everyday
After step 1, think of that area of your life that you want to focus on. If you could have everything you wanted in this area of your life, what words would you use to describe how that would feel?
Rather than say “amazing” “awesome” “great” or something along those lines, I want you to describe how it would feel to embody having that area of your life handled.
If you want to get on top of your finances, you may describe that feeling as “security” “freedom” or “power”
If you want to step it up in your career, you may describe that feeling as “connection” “purposeful” “alignment”
If you want to call in your soul mate, you may describe that feeling as “connection” “love” “security”
Or maybe you want to embody a different state, handle things differently or evolve as a person then perhaps like me a word like “surrender” “resilience” “breathe” is more appropriate.
You get to do this your way.
Write down the words that you are playing with and then take a birds eye view to look at the other areas of your life. What feelings would you like to feel in your life as a whole? Brainstorm your list and play with them over the next few days.
Step 3: Take a bird’s eye view and pick one guiding word for 2019
Write down the words that you are playing with and then take a bird’s eye view to look at the other areas of your life. What feelings would you like to feel in your life as a whole?
Brainstorm your list or words and try them on over the next few days.
When you’re ready pick one guiding word that encompasses the essence of what your year is about.
Now, I want to hear from you!
