Hello from Tokyo!
This week I’ve been spending time with my family and friends, thoroughly enjoying that feeling of switching off.
That old saying of having to “disconnect in order to reconnect” is so true!
Last week I shared with you all my 10 lessons from 3 years of business and blogging.
I’ve been reflecting a lot on lesson #8 where I shared that “sometimes going slow and steady beats fast and furious.”
And I’ll be honest I’m feeling like it’s a lesson I still need to learn right now….
….The great thing about stepping away from your normal life and routine is that you can see things objectively and get a little perspective.
It’s a great chance to lift your head up and see where you’re spending all your time, energy and focus and whether it’s truly making you happy and fulfilled.
If you’re off for the Easter holiday or taking a Spring break I really recommend that you take just 10 minutes out for yourself to do a little check-in to make sure you’re on the right track. More on that in a minute…
I’ll be honest…
If I could have my time again I would have approached the last 3 years very differently.
3 years is a good chunk of time….my university degree was 3 years long and I learned a lot in just 10 contact hours of lectures and classes a week!
If I could have my time again, I wouldn’t have rushed so much.
I would have played the long game, with more patience, joy and presence.
After all what is the rush, anyway?
Why do we want to be further ahead than where we’re at right now?
The truth is we’re all exactly where we’re meant to be and we have a choice on how we want to move forward.
Rather than shoulda, woulda, coulda-ing myself…I’m choosing to learn the lesson now and make smarter decisions for the next 90 days.
Instead of my usual “let’s pack everything in” mentality, I’m choosing to slow it down and set goals that really matter – whilst assigning some “good”, “better”, and “best” targets that give me a range to shoot for.
My overall mantra for this year is Self Mastery + Trust and the next 90 days is about working on this through many different ways (health, work, self-care, parenting etc). If you need help with your mantra make sure you check out THIS POST from the beginning of the year.
If you feel like you’re on a treadmill of always being on the go, go, go and you want to take 10 minutes out for yourself to do a quick check-in here’s a quick routine that you can try out.
Step #1: Block out 10-30 minutes in your calendar where you can have quiet, uninterrupted time.
Let’s be honest if you don’t schedule time for yourself it’s not going to happen. Take a minute now to mark your calendar and make sure you make a note to get yourself a notebook, pen and some water.
When you’re ready to do your check in follow the steps below.
Step #2: Breathe
Before diving in, take a minute to let the activities of the day go from your mind.
Find a comfortable space to sit down and take 3 deep breaths in and out. Allow your body to relax and feel that tension melt away from your neck, shoulders and back.
Step #3: Grab your notebook and ask yourself these key questions
Grabbing your notebook either can either:
- Silently repeat the question to yourself
- Write the question at the top of your journal
Write down your response in your notebook. Allow yourself to spend at least a minute each answering these core questions:
- What is most important to you this year? e.g. getting clear on your next career move, getting a promotion, starting a family, learning how to say “no”. Write as much or as little as you like
- Why is this important to you? Dig deep.
- What is working in your life right now to support what’s important in your life? e.g. your exercise routine, meditation etc.
- What isn’t working in your life right now? e.g. working late nights, lack of sleep etc.
- Of those things that are important to you, where do you want to be in 90 days time? e.g. have another job offer, find your first paying client, enroll in a program
- What is it going to take to achieve your 90 day goals? e.g. saying no to friday night dinners every week with friends, not taking phone calls when you’re working on your stuff, refusing to pickup someone’s slack at work (again)
Step #4: Connect + Breathe
Take a moment to connect to that feeling of where you will being 90 days time. How do you feel? Proud. Ecstatic. On purpose. Connected.
Feel whatever feeling comes up for you and take 3 deep breaths feeling those emotions in your body.
Step #5: Celebrate!
Awesome work! You’ve just done your check in to make sure you’re working towards the right goals for you. Give yourself a pat on the back. Seriously – I mean it. You’ve done awesome.
Step #5: Schedule
Schedule whatever you need to do to make your goals happen. Prioritise you!
