I was at my friend’s book launch the other week and found myself retelling my story and journey to how I founded The Neon Life Society.
As I was speaking I recalled all the “mistakes” I made in the 3 years between leaving my corporate job and officially launching The Neon Life Society as a business….
An organic skincare business idea, an almost business partnership in the sustainability space, going back to work as a strategic consultant….
Let’s just say there were a lot of false starts and tears along the way!
Whilst I didn’t nail the right career for me after my last corporate job, I did do something to move me forward closer to my my heart’s calling. And that’s action.
Do I wish I could have nailed it out of the gate? Absolutely.
But the truth is I wouldn’t have learned the all important lessons about myself along the way (more on that in another post)….
The truth is sometimes you’ve just gotta fail forward.
When you have your idea on what it is that you want to do career wise, how do you test it out or have the confidence to take that next step?
Women go through so many transitions in life. We get married. Have babies. Get promotions.
With (or quite frankly without) those milestones we change our minds on what matters most and where we want to go.
When I was in corporate I was a go-getter. I only had to worry about myself and I could afford to work late nights at the office and pull all nighters to work my way up the corporate ladder.
But as I’ve had kids it’s been different. It’s been a great lesson and a great reminder of how important self care is to not only look after myself but to also look after my kids and model some healthy behaviors so that they themselves know how to have a healthy and adjusted life.
I definitely am not an expert in it and I have so much to learn in this area but I share this with because I believe it’s important that when you’re looking to make a change that you do it in a way that’s constructive where you can test out an idea and be smart and and sensible and give yourself the time and space to explore without unnecessary pressure.
So many women come to me at that final moment where they need to quit because they’re at their wits end.
When you’re in that state it’s very hard to make a smart decision about your career because you’re in fight or flight mode.
I know that’s what I did! And I do not recommend it! Side note: If you need support on this, please schedule a career breakthrough session with me so I can help!
So if you’re thinking of a new career idea give yourself a big of space and set up a project.
Here are 3 steps to validating your career options.
Step 1: Set a timeline for your career idea project
Allow yourself a finite amount of time to research your idea. It could be a week, a month or three months. Choose what’s right for you right now.
Step 2: Create a list of questions you need answered in order to validate your idea
Get clear on what’s important for you to know about your career or business idea.
Step 3: Speak to people
Use your network and speak to people who are either doing it, or in the industry or know of your idea. Get firsthand information.
Now I’d love to hear from you….
Where are you in your journey?
