Growing up in Hong Kong I’ve always been fascinated by Bruce Lee.
As a Hong Kong kid he went to school not far from my old high school, King George V.
Rumor has it that he used to wait outside our school gates and pick fights with the big kids so that he could practice his fighting skills. Yesh!
Whilst I’m not big into fighting, I am big into mindset and really admire Bruce Lee for making it in Hollywood.
How did he make it big after coming from such humble beginnings?
Turns out he was not only strong in his body, he was also strong in his mind.
He was super clear on his goals and fiercely dedicated to making them happen.
During a visit to the history museum in Hong Kong with my kiddos I stumbled across this letter he had written….his chief aim letter.
It’s a little tricky to read but this is basically what it says:
My Definite Chief Aim
I, Bruce Lee, will be the first highest paid Oriental super star in the United States. In return I will give the most exciting performances and render the best of quality in the capacity of an actor. Starting 1970 I will achieve world fame and from then onward till the end of 1980 I will have in my possession $10,000,000. I will live the way I please and achieve inner harmony and happiness.
:: Bruce Lee 1969 ::
So what happened?
Well Bruce Lee’s first major film, The Big Boss was released in 1971. The world fame he desired came to be but unfortunately he passed away in 1973 before he could hit his monetary goal.
However it just goes to show that he was clear on his goals and went full pelt in the time that he was here.
Can you imagine US$10M back in the 80’s? Nuts right.
I admire him for going big.
What can we learn from Bruce Lee?
Well he taught me to go big. Don’t play small. And commit to going pro in achieving your dreams.
With life things might not work out according to plan maybe the US$10M is destined to come in the 90’s or it’s meant to be US$8M but the thing is…if you take action you’ll get a hell of a lot closer than if you don’t do anything at all.
A dream without action is exactly that. A dream.
